The British Navy, together with its NATO allies, conducted a three-day surveillance operation for the Russian submarine B-265 “Krasnodar”, which was passing through the English Channel together with a support vessel.

Details: It is about the Russian diesel-electric submarine of the “Kilo” class (according to the NATO classification) “Krasnodar” and the tugboat “Altai”. For their continuous escort, the British Navy used a specialized anti-submarine helicopter Merlin and a military tanker RFA Tidesurge.

Russian boats arrived from the waters of the North Sea, passed through the Pas de Calais and entered the English Channel. It is known that these ships left the base on December 7.

The Royal Navy emphasized that they were ready to “launch anti-submarine operations” if the “Krasnodar” tried to sink. However, despite the adverse weather conditions, the submarine floated on the surface the entire way.

Near the French island of Huissan, the British Navy handed over surveillance duties to NATO allies.

The command of the British Navy notes that this operation is part of increased monitoring of Russian activity, which has increased significantly since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Over the past two years, London recorded a 30 percent increase in the number of Russian vessels “threatening UK waters.”

What preceded:

  • In July, British aviation and navy already escorted another Russian submarine, “Novorossiysk”, which was discovered in the country’s territorial waters.
  • Last month there was an incident with a Russian reconnaissance ship “Amber” near Scotland. The Russians aimed laser beams at a Boeing P-8A Poseidon patrol plane in an attempt to blind the pilots.
  • After this incident, John Geely warned the Kremlin that Britain would change the rules on the use of weapons and be ready to use force in case of further provocations.
  • Against the background of the growing threat, British Defense Secretary John Gealy announced on December 8 the creation Atlantic Bastion systems (“Atlantic Bastion”) – a project to protect underwater cables and pipelines from Russian sabotage.
  • Also London signed a defense pact with Norway, which provides for the creation of a united navy.
