Prime Minister of Iceland Bjarni Benediktsson announced that he will appeal to President Halla Tomasdottir with a request to dissolve the parliament and announced special elections for the end of November.

He said this at a press conference on Sunday, Ukrinform reports with reference to Bloomberg.

As noted, the reason for this decision was the collapse of the coalition. Discontent in the tripartite cabinet had been simmering for some time, culminating in Benediktsson’s statement.

“Closer to autumn, differences began to appear between the parties of the coalition,” he said, noting that there were differences of opinion regarding asylum seekers and energy policy.

“I came to the conclusion that the probability that an agreement will be reached on these main issues is small,” said the prime minister.

According to him, he plans to meet with the president on Monday and ask her to dissolve the parliament.

Benediktsson’s Independence Party has reportedly ruled together with the left-wing Green Movement and the centrist Progressive Party since 2017.

Benediktsson headed the party only in April, when his predecessor Katrin Jakobsdottir decided to run for president in the June elections, but she did not win.
