As the correspondent of UNIAN reports, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said this at the press conference following the informal meeting of the heads of states and governments of the EU member states.In particular, she was asked whether Europe is ready to cover the shortfall in aid to Ukraine if the newly elected US President Donald Trump decides to cut aid.
The President of the European Commission first noted that the financial support for Ukraine is being formed very carefully. In particular, we are talking about the creation of the Ukraine Facility in the amount of 50 billion euros and an additional loan from the “Big Seven” countries in the amount of 50 billion dollars for the period until 2026.
“But, in my opinion, it is more important that we and our American friends also discuss the fact that Russia is a threat not only to Europe, but also to global security as a whole. Because Russia is not only an autocratic state. It threatens democracies. But it also is getting closer to Iran and North Korea and is fueling this war with China. And I think that’s an argument where we have to be very clear with our American friends.” – emphasized von der Leyen.
In this regard, as the President of the EC noted, technologies from China and Iran are being used by Russia on the battlefield in the war against Ukraine.
In her opinion, this proves that the security of the Indo-Pacific region and Europe are connected, because the EU and the USA have interests in these regions.
What is expected from TrumpAccording to Bloomberg, which refers to informed interlocutors, Trump understands that he cannot force Ukraine to make concessions to Russia without receiving certain concessions from Moscow in return. During the election campaign, Trump promised a quick end to hostilities in Ukraine, but was ambiguous about his support for Kyiv.
Therefore, European leaders are now actively discussing how to act if the new US administration refuses to support Ukraine.
