“Because I believe that if we send tens or hundreds of billions to Ukraine just to buy them weapons and military equipment, we will only continue the conflict, which has devastating consequences for Ukraine,” he added.
The President of Slovakia said that such large funds should be spent only on the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine, “to help this country recover, to provide it with electricity again, to rebuild all the destroyed buildings, destroyed cities.”
“I believe that this will be a better and more effective use of money for the people of Ukraine than to continue military operations with the help of such huge infusions, because today it is obvious to everyone that Ukraine, given the huge army and the tenacity of the Russian army, is simply not capable of winning this war and pushing it out of its territory,” Pellegrini added.
What preceded: Currently, the European Union is discussing two decisions regarding the financing of Ukraine in 2026-2027. One of them proposes to use funds from frozen Russian assets in the EU to provide Ukraine with a “reparation loan”.
Even before the announcement of the new proposal, Belgium called it categorically unacceptable.
The day before, Hungary blocked the adoption of a potential decision to issue Eurobonds to finance Ukraine – an alternative to using Russia’s frozen assets.
