He believes that people should not panic.
As reported by ERR, the politician stated that defense spending was increased not because of preparations for war, but for its prevention – so that a potential aggressor would not want to invade Estonia. According to him, there are similar fears in Finnish society:
“I spoke to President Stubb recently about Finland. They have a similar situation. There was some false fear that war was about to start. But there is not.”
When asked if the youth’s talk about where to move in the event of war is a sign of fear, Karis said that there would be no need to move because there would be no war.
“I’m sure our will to defend is pretty high. Research shows that. But we don’t want to test that in practice. We don’t want to test Article 5 or see if people will run or take up arms and defend themselves. We don’t want that, so we have to do everything so that no one comes here came and not even think about it,” the president explained.
Military threat to EstoniaIn September, the Minister of Defense of the country, Hanno Pevkur, stated that the Russian Federation is a threat both to Estonia and to the entire North Atlantic Alliance.
