On Monday, January 6, Austrian President Alexander van der Bellen, after a meeting with far-right leader Herbert Kickle, instructed him to start coalition negotiations on the formation of a government with the ruling Austrian People’s Party.

This is reported by Euronews.

Van der Bellen held a meeting with Kickle after earlier talks between the Austrian People’s Party, the Social Democrats and the liberal NEOS broke down.

“Kikl is confident that he will be able to find viable solutions within the framework of government negotiations, and he wants to fulfill this duty,” Van der Bellen said.

If successful, it would be Austria’s first far-right-led government since World War II.

These political forces tried to form a government and prevent the far-right Party of Freedom, which won the elections, from coming to power.

After the September elections, all the parties that entered the parliament ruled out the possibility of a coalition with the Party of Freedom led by Kikle. However, after the failure of the coalition negotiations, the leader of the Austrian People’s Party, Karl Neghammer, who was most opposed to the alliance with Kicklem, resigned.

On January 5, the new leader of the Austrian People’s Party, Christian Stocker, announced that he is ready to negotiate with the far-right Freedom Party of Austria on a coalition and form a government.
