Serhii Rakhmanin, a member of the Verkhovna Rada’s Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence, noted in an interview with Radio NV that the practice of analyzing operations, which is one of NATO’s standards, has not taken root in the Ukrainian army.
“Another point, which, again, we do not do, although it should be done, and it was talked about quite a lot, in particular in our committee, is the introduction of the practice of analyzing the actions taken. This is a completely normal process when [аналізується] any operation – successful or not – even in combat conditions (I know brigades where this happens), decomposes into atoms and molecules all the actions of each unit, each fighter, each unit – right or wrong. And this allows us to avoid mistakes in the future, avoids unjustified losses,” said Rachmanin on Radio NV.
According to the people’s deputy, this practice is a system “never caught on”, although it is also one of the NATO standards.
“No matter how we feel – with understanding or with irony – to certain NATO standards, but this is the practice that should exist. It is introduced in individual brigades – where the brigade commanders understand the logic of this – but [загалом] there is no such thing,” said Rachmanin.
Yuriy Butusov, editor-in-chief of Censor.NET, stated more than once about the lack of post-operative analysis in the Ukrainian army.
In particular, in November 2023, he attributed the death of 19 soldiers of the 128th brigade during a ceremonial line-up near the front line to the lack of such practice.
“Because we have all these standards – they are just words of chatter, which no commander, no general practices in practice and does not apply. If we had such a post-operative analysis, then we would have provided the necessary conclusions to the team by at least March 18, 2022. When, as a result of the fact that units of the 137th battalion were pushed into one barracks in Mykolaiv, almost 200 Ukrainian servicemen were killed by two rockets,” Butusov said at the time.
