The participating countries of the annual mine action conference UMAC 2025, which started on October 22 in Japan and gathered representatives of 57 countries, will additionally allocate more than $80 million to support humanitarian demining of Ukraine.
Donors include Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, and Sweden.
Japan, as the host country, has announced a new package of support for Ukraine’s long-term reconstruction, including human capacity development, victim rehabilitation and reintegration.
A number of memoranda on international partnership were signed at the conference: with Slovenia — strengthening coordination in demining and reconstruction, with Japan — strategic partnership in mine action, with Azerbaijan — training of Ukrainian sappers and exchange of practices.
Also, representatives of 45 countries and international organizations adopted a joint document confirming the determination to speed up humanitarian demining of Ukraine in three key areas: people, technologies, nexus approach.
The Ukrainian delegation expressed gratitude to the Japanese government for its leadership and called the conference a platform of unity, innovation and joint action aimed at accelerating the recovery of Ukraine and strengthening global security.
We will remind you that Italy is considering the possibility of sending a group of sappers to Ukraine for demining the de-occupied territories and the waters of the seas.
It will be recalled that Turkey is ready to participate at least in the post-war demining of the Black Sea. Ankara is also considering sending troops to Ukraine as part of security guarantees.
It will be recalled that the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, announced that Turkey expressed its readiness to be a part of security guarantees for Ukraine.
