The police of the Poltava region completed the pre-trial investigation and referred to the court the case of an organized group of fraudsters who extorted money from Ukrainians under the guise of investment projects.
The National Police writes about it.
Criminals convinced the victims, mostly young people, to take out online loans and transfer funds to allegedly double their capital. After receiving the funds, the participants stopped communication, converted the stolen money into cryptocurrency and divided the profits among themselves. The law enforcement officers managed to document 12 episodes of criminal activity, the total amount of damages for which reached almost 900 thousand hryvnias.
The scheme was based on finding victims in thematic online communities, where participants were promised easy earnings and super high profits without much effort. Cyber police, together with investigators, eliminated the group in September of last year, establishing that the organizers deliberately manipulated the trust of people who were looking for a quick income. Currently, two key figures in the case have been placed on bail, and for what they have committed, they face up to 12 years in prison with mandatory confiscation of property.
The perpetrators are charged with fraud committed on a particularly large scale as part of an organized group. Law enforcement agencies emphasize the importance of a critical attitude to get-rich-quick offers on the Internet, as such projects often become a tool for financial fraud. During the investigation, the alleged involvement of Russian-made technical means to anonymize the actions of fraudsters in the network was also checked.
The Security Service of Ukraine exposed a Russian financial pyramid worth almost 40 million dollars in Ukraine. The fraudulent scheme was disguised as a pseudo-investment project and they even tried to open an office in Kyiv.
Another fraudulent investment scheme was also blocked in Ukraine, the organizers of which defrauded investors of more than 250 million hryvnias.
