The next eight weeks will be the “most difficult” in the history of Ukraine after 1991 – Ambassador Melnyk

Ukrainian diplomacy should “actively work” with the team of newly elected US President Donald Trump and develop several scenarios for the end of the war, Ukrainian Ambassador to Brazil Andriy Melnyk said in an interview with Radio Liberty.

According to him, “before Trump’s inauguration, Ukraine will face the most difficult weeks in its history, because the newly elected US president wants to quickly end the Russian war against Ukraine.”

Melnyk noted that “Ukrainian diplomacy should actively work with Trump’s team and develop several scenarios for the end of the war in order to avoid the imposition of peaceful solutions from the outside.”

“Trust me, my feeling: these next eight weeks will be the most responsible and difficult in the history of Ukraine after 1991. That is, now it is necessary to decide. When the day of the inauguration comes, I’m afraid, by that time the decision will have been made and then it will be more difficult for us,” stressed Andriy Melnyk.

He emphasized the need to focus all efforts on these eight critical weeks before the inauguration of President Trump.

“All possible channels that exist – diplomatic, political, family, social, religious, whatever – are needed in order for our diplomacy to work not only in Washington, but first of all in Mar-a-Lago, in Florida – where there is more part of the time is spent by the president-elect — to really disrupt what we expect, to work out a few scenarios there, how that might be. The worst thing will be if some decisions are imposed on Ukraine through our heads,” the ambassador added.

Donald Trump won the US presidential election, the change of administration and transfer of power should take place on January 20.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that after being elected president, he will be able to stop the war in Ukraine “within 24 hours.” Both in Moscow and Kyiv, these words were commented on with skepticism. The Washington Post newspaper previously wrote about the details of Trump’s alleged peace plan: it is claimed that he wants to put pressure on both Moscow and Kyiv in order to force them to make peace at the price of Ukraine giving up part of its territories, and Russia giving up other of its demands. Trump has not officially confirmed that this is the plan.

Zelensky said that he had a “great conversation” with Trump on the evening of November 6. Also, on November 7, the Ukrainian president stated that he did not know the details of Donald Trump’s plan for a quick end to the war between Ukraine and Russia. He did not discuss it with the newly elected president of the United States.
