Such a statement was made by the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Leonid Tymchenko.

“As of today, there are 53,868 people who are considered missing under special circumstances. These are both civilians and military personnel. There are also children among them,” he said on the air of the “We are Ukraine” TV channel.

According to Tymchenko, regarding missing persons, military investigators and criminal investigation officers receive the necessary information both from their comrades and from intelligence agencies.

“Investigators must record all the information received about the last place of stay of a soldier who went missing under special circumstances. All this information is recorded. Information from brothers who were with him or her, where he was last seen, is recorded,” explained the deputy minister .

If there is information from drones about the whereabouts of a wounded soldier or the body of a fallen defender, it is also included in criminal proceedings. But the person still remains in the Register of Missing Persons until their body is returned.

“Until we receive the body, until we receive information sufficient to say that the person died, we cannot exclude him from the Register,” Leonid Tymchenko stated.

The war in Ukraine: the missingDuring the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine, tens of thousands of Ukrainians disappeared. It is about both the military and civilians. There were cases when civilians were declared missing after rescuers did not find bodies in the ruins of houses shelled by the Russians.

A huge number of people among the missing are military personnel. In July, the mass media reported that 788 Ukrainian servicemen went missing in Krynyk, Kherson region alone.

In October 2024, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, announced that Ukraine had managed to obtain lists of missing servicemen.
