“The last time Slovak land was ceded to an aggressor – in the name of peace – it did not turn into anything good and did not bring peace to Slovaks or other peoples,” the message reads.
It is about the events of 1938, when Slovakia was still part of Czechoslovakia and became part of the Munich Agreement.
Without the participation of Czechoslovakia itself, Great Britain, France, Germany and Italy agreed to hand over the predominantly German Sudetenland to Germany in exchange for promises of peace from Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
Then the dictator demanded its accession, citing the alleged protection of the rights of the German minority.
Slovak President Peter Pellegrini believes that peace in Ukraine can only be achieved through compromise, and this does not exclude the loss of part of the territory.
“When it comes to peace, I believe that it is necessary to maintain realism. Today, probably no one in Europe among sane people believes that it will be possible to achieve peace without any partial territorial losses for Ukraine,” the Slovak president said.
