The new Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands will be the MEP from the European People’s Party Tom Berendsen. His candidacy was nominated by the center-right CDA party, which became part of the new coalition led by Prime Minister Rob Yetten. The swearing-in of the new minority government, which unites the parties D66, VVD and CDA, is scheduled for February 23.
Euractiv writes about it.
42-year-old Berendsen has been working in the European Parliament since 2019 and is known for his active support of Ukraine in the fight against the Russian Federation. He advocates strengthening Europe’s defense capabilities and reducing economic dependence on China. In his party, the politician has a reputation as a prudent and professional diplomat specializing in industry and energy.
The formation of the new cabinet was completed after the October elections, where the liberal D66 party won by a narrow margin. The official inauguration of the government will take place on the eve of the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation. Berendsen has already stated that he considers the appointment to this position a great responsibility for the country and international partners.
Meanwhile, the future Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Rob Yetten, said that he sees no reason for negotiations with Vladimir Putin. According to him, Russia does not show any desire to end the war, so the new government will continue to support Ukraine.
