The statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Radoslaw Sikorski, about transferring Crimea under the UN mandate and holding a referendum there is unacceptable.

This was stated by the chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Refat Chubarov.

“The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Radoslav Sikorskyi, publicly suggested that in order to stop Russia’s war against Ukraine, our state should cede Crimea. It is not possible to interpret the words of the Polish diplomat otherwise,” Chubarov said.

According to him, the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people considers such statements unacceptable and cynical. After all, they do not correspond to the national interests of Ukraine, as well as the rights and interests of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people of Ukraine.

The Mejlis reminded that according to the national legislation of Ukraine and international law, “legal residents” of Crimea are exclusively citizens of Ukraine and persons who have legally established their permanent or temporary stay on Ukrainian territory, which is confirmed in accordance with the procedure established by Ukrainian legislation. That is why other attempts to establish the legality of a person’s residence in the Ukrainian Crimea are unnecessary and impractical.

“Crimea is a temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine, and the first step to establishing peace should be the withdrawal of the Russian occupying forces from the territory of the peninsula,” the statement said.

It will be recalled that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Radoslaw Sikorsky, stated that Crimea has a decisive role in the issue of possible peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. That is why one of the options for solving the issue regarding the peninsula may be its transfer under the mandate of the UN. Further, after the expulsion of the Russians brought to the peninsula, it will be possible to hold a referendum there, in which state the residents want to remain.

The head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak also reacted to the Polish minister’s statement.
