French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called US President Donald Trump’s threats to impose tariffs against their countries that do not support his position on Greenland unacceptable and wrong.

Macron’s direct speech: “No amount of intimidation or threats can influence us, neither in Ukraine, nor in Greenland, nor in other parts of the world, when we are faced with such situations.

Threats to impose tariffs are unacceptable and have no place in this context. The Europeans will give them a unified and coordinated response if they are confirmed. We know how to ensure respect for European sovereignty. It is in this spirit that I will conduct negotiations with our European partners.”

Starmer’s direct speech: “Our position on Greenland is very clear – it is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and its future is a matter for Greenlanders and Danes… We have also made it clear that the security of the Arctic is important for all of NATO, and the Allies must jointly make more efforts to counter the threat from Russia in various parts of the Arctic.

The imposition of tariffs on allies to ensure the collective security of NATO allies is absolutely wrong. We will, of course, discuss this issue directly with the US administration.”

Kristersson’s direct speech: “We will not give in to blackmail. Only Denmark and Greenland decide matters concerning Denmark and Greenland. I will always defend my country and our neighboring allies. This is an EU issue that affects many more countries than those currently listed. Sweden is currently in intensive negotiations with other EU countries, Norway and Great Britain to agree on a common position.”

What preceded: US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced the introduction of tariffs from February 1 against a number of countries that do not agree with his position on Greenland.

According to him, from February 1, 2026, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland will be subject to a 10% tariff on all goods exported to the United States. From June 1, 2026, the tariff will be increased to 25%.
