The names of the winners were traditionally announced on December 17, on the birthday of linguist, historian of Ukrainian literature, essayist Yury Shevelyov. The ceremony took place at the Kyiv-Mohyla Business School.
“Although this book is called the name of a city, it is a book about people. For me, books at this time are what makes the foundation. Foreigners, in particular, say that we are a shaky, uncertain country. Books record this foundation.” – said in his speech Myroslav Layuk.
Myroslav Layuk – Ukrainian writer, teacher. The author of the novels “Babornya”, “The World is Not Created”, “Iron Water”, poetry collections “Osote!”, “Metrophobia”, “Rose”. Participant of poetry festivals and literary events in South Africa, Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Poland, etc. His tVori has been translated and published in more than ten languages.
“Bakhmut” is a book of reports and essays about the history of Bakhmut, life of the war, irreparable losses and the phenomenon of memory and forgetting, published by Ukrainer publishing house. The book was also shortlisted for the BBC Book of the Year 2024.

“The book consists of two parts. The first part is a report, and the second – pure unadulterated essay writing. The combination of these two genres, in my opinion, worked as Aristotle thought the third genre should work – tragedy”, – noted at the ceremony a member of the Prize Chapter, philosopher, translator Oleksiy Panych.
The winner received a statuette of a Bronze Angel made by a sculptor Svetlana Karunskaas well as a cash prize and a laureate’s diploma.
Apart from Laiuk, there were applicants for the 2024 Yury Shevelyov Prize Yulia Buyskih“West of the Bug” (Publishing House 21), and Anton Sanchenko“On the Black Sea wave: the 33rd century of the mined sea” (Bohdan).
This year, a special chapter award was presented as part of the award Vasyl Makhnu “for a special voice in Ukrainian essay writing of the last twenty years and building bridges of cultural understanding”.
Also, during the ceremony, a special award was presented to Radio Kultura for the fifth time. I got it Stanislav Aseev for a book “Melchior’s elephant, or the man who thought.”

About the Shevelyov Prize Prize named after Yuriy Shevelyov was founded in 2013. Awarded once a year to a Ukrainian author for artistic and scientific essay writing. The award is named after the linguist who started modern Ukrainian essay writing.
