Trump no longer just secretly dreams of dividing Europe with Putin, he officially declares it in the US national strategy.
A new geopolitical alliance is being formed, aimed at Europe / UNIAN collage, photo by REUTERSThe new US National Security Strategy should be the last warning to Europe that it is left alone in containing Russian expansion. At best, Washington will simply stand aside, at worst – it will help Moscow. Natalie Tocci, an Italian political scientist and specialist in international relations, director of the leading Italian analytical center Istituto Affari Internazionali, writes about this in an author’s article for Foreign Policy.
“Europeans have lulled themselves into believing that US President Donald Trump is unpredictable and inconsistent, but ultimately manageable. It’s strangely reassuring, but it’s wrong,” she writes.
Tocci notes that the new US national security strategy released this week demonstrates the Trump administration’s desire to have good relations with Russia, not Europe. In her opinion, the US president dreams, together with Putin, to “divide and conquer” the European continent, entrusting a significant part of the “dirty work” to nationalist, far-right European forces supported by both Moscow and Washington.
“It is long past time for Europe to realize that when it comes to the war between Russia and Ukraine and the security of the continent, it is, at best, alone. At worst, it now faces two adversaries: Russia in the east and Trump’s United States in the west,” the analyst warns.
Tocci criticizes Europe’s tactics of “turning the cheek” to Trump in an attempt to preserve the already destroyed transatlantic alliance. In her opinion, Europeans should finally take their own security into their own hands.
“Russia’s war of imperial conquest begins with Ukraine, but it does not end there, and the capitulation of Kyiv will only free up Russian resources to open new fronts against Europe. Ukraine, unfortunately, is the gate that prevents the transformation of the hybrid war that is already raging in Europe into a much more serious military attack,” she warns.
The analyst urges European leaders to focus on the long-term goal and not argue over short-term problems. In this context, she considers it necessary to transfer frozen Russian assets to Ukraine, even if this creates certain legal problems. After all, in the longer term, the defeat of Ukraine will cost Europe much more.
The new official US strategyAs UNIAN wrote, earlier this week the White House published a new US National Security Strategy, which is more like a declaration of friendship between the US and Russia against democratic Europe. This document was a new blow to Europe’s relations with America.
The document declares the priority of the “America First” approach, the reduction of US security commitments in Europe and the de facto cessation of further NATO expansion. The strategy emphasizes that European countries should independently provide their own defense, while the US will concentrate resources on other regions.
At the same time, the strategy identifies the “restoration of strategic stability” in relations with Russia as one of the key priorities, avoiding the direct identification of the Russian Federation as the aggressor in the war against Ukraine. According to analysts, this balance looks favorable for Moscow.
The document describes European countries in a sharply critical tone – as a region with demographic, economic and civilizational problems, which allegedly loses its ability to be a reliable partner.
