Peskov’s direct speech: You know that Putin is talking to Orbán. And Putin supported the peace efforts of the Prime Minister of Hungary (regarding the “Christmas truce” – ed.). But at the same time, these efforts were not supported by the Ukrainian side, namely Zelenskyi. This is the situation.”

Details: Peskov also announced the Kremlin’s readiness to resume peace talks, but on the basis of the so-called “Istanbul agreements”.

“Putin repeatedly repeated that they (negotiations – ed.) could resume on the basis of the Istanbul agreements. They were agreed, but then the Ukrainian side also left the negotiating table,” said Peskov.

What happened before: On December 12, Peskov stated that in response to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s initiative on the “Christmas truce” and the exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine, the Russian Federation submitted its proposals to Budapest. According to him, during a telephone conversation with Putin, Orban made a proposal to carry out a large exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine on the eve of Christmas, as well as to announce a Christmas ceasefire.

“On the same day, the FSB of Russia submitted our proposals regarding the exchange of prisoners to the Hungarian embassy in Moscow, however, judging by Zelensky’s reaction on social networks, as well as his entourage, the Ukrainian side rejected all of Orban’s proposals,” said Peskov.

  • Prehistory:
  • Orban said on December 11 that Hungary had offered Ukraine a Christmas ceasefire and a large-scale exchange of prisoners of war, but President Volodymyr Zelenskyi allegedly rejected the idea.
  • Orban said this in a comment to the post of the President of Ukraine, in which Zelensky sharply reacted to the conversation of the Hungarian Prime Minister with the owner of the Kremlin, Putin, which took place on Wednesday.
  • The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijarto, called his colleague from the Russian Federation, Serhiy Lavrov, to complain about this to Ukraine.
  • National security adviser Mike Waltz, nominated by Donald Trump, said that the world would welcome a “certain cessation” of hostilities in Ukraine, like the “Christmas truce” proposed by Viktor Orbán.
