Ukrainian forces resumed offensive operations on at least three fronts within the Ukrainian salient in Russia’s Kursk region and achieved a tactical advance on January 5, according to a report by the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Russian sources claim that Ukrainian troops conducted several mechanized attacks northeast of Suzhi in three waves using approximately a battalion’s worth of armored vehicles, and also intensified offensive actions in the direction of Leonidovo (southeast of Korenevo) and conducted a reinforced platoon mechanized attack in the Pushkarny region (east from Suji).

Geolocation images published on January 5 indicate that Ukrainian forces advanced in the fields to the southwest and south of Berdin and entered the southern part of the settlement, analysts write.

“Russian media bloggers have published updated maps of the Kursk region, which indicate that as of January 5, Ukrainian forces also occupy Cherkasy Porichne, Martynivka, and Mykhailivka (all northeast of Suzhi and southwest of Berdin), and also reported that Ukrainian forces recently entered Novosotnytskyi (east of Berdin); and advanced in the fields to the west of the Yamsky Steppe and to the west of Novaya Sorochyna. Russian media bloggers reported that Ukrainian forces also conducted offensive operations in the vicinity of Nikolskyi and Oleksandria (east and southeast of Leonidovo, respectively) and north of Ruska Konopelka (east of Suzhi) in the direction of Pushkarnyi in small infantry groups,” the message reads. .

The ISW added that Russian forces advanced southeast of Suja and counterattacked against intensified Ukrainian attacks southeast of Korenevoy and north of Suja. Geolocation images released on January 5 show that Russian troops have advanced in the western and southern parts of Makhnovka (southeast of Suja).

On January 5, Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation of the NSDC, reported that “Russian troops in Kursk were attacked from several directions, which was a surprise for them.”

Subsequently, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation confirmed that the Armed Forces of Ukraine had launched a new assault on Kurshchyna. At the same time, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, announced “good news” from the Kursk region” and that Russia “receives what it deserves.”

The armed forces of Ukraine began an operation in the Kursk region on August 6, occupying more than 1,000 square kilometers. Then the Russian army, with the help of North Korean troops, was able to recapture part of the territory.

In November, the Reuters agency, citing a high-ranking Ukrainian military source who works in the General Staff of Ukraine, reported that due to Russian counterattacks, Ukraine had lost more than 40% of the territory in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, which it captured during hostilities in August. According to the source, Russia has deployed about 59,000 troops in the Kursk region.
