The International Monetary Fund called the decisive fight against corruption one of the main elements of reforms in Ukraine, which will create conditions for preserving state resources, improving the business climate and attracting more investments.
Julia Kozak, Director of the Foundation’s Communications Department, stated this during a press briefing in Washington.
She noted that recent events in Ukraine emphasize the need to improve governance and continue reforming state-owned enterprises. According to Kozak, the country needs a strong anti-corruption architecture that will ensure a level playing field, help preserve state resources, improve the business climate and attract private investment.
As part of the new EFF program, the Ukrainian authorities confirmed their commitment to preserving independent anti-corruption institutions, continuing tax and customs reforms, including appointing a new head of customs, and improving IT systems to increase efficiency and restore public trust.
In addition, Kyiv undertook to improve financial planning, reporting and auditing, as well as to reform the procedures for appointing heads of state-owned enterprises and banks.
Ukraine and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) reached a staff-level agreement on a new $8.2 billion lending program.
Earlier, the International Monetary Fund noted the significant progress of the State Customs Service of Ukraine in implementing reforms and offered to grant the customs office the status of a law enforcement agency.
The European Commission stated that the IMF’s approval of a new credit program for Ukraine is directly related to the approval of a financial assistance package from the European Union, which is still missing.
