The IAEA sent an additional team of experts to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant to assess the safety of the New Safe Confinement (NSC), which was damaged after a Russian drone strike.

This was announced by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.

According to Grossi, this week the International Atomic Energy Agency sent specialists to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant to assess in detail the state of the structure after the Russian attack on February 14, 2025.

Experts will analyze the current technical condition of the NBK, its operational characteristics after damage, as well as the effectiveness of measures to reduce risks for nuclear safety.

The Director General emphasized that the additional group joined the permanent mission of the IAEA, which has been working at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant since January 2023.

A new safe confinement, erected in 2016, covers the “Shelter” facility above the destroyed 4th power unit. Its task is to isolate radioactive materials and prevent potential releases into the environment.

The building is a giant arched steel structure designed for more than 100 years of operation. It provides the possibility of safely dismantling the old sarcophagus and carrying out work inside the destroyed block.

However, any structural damage can reduce its effectiveness and accelerate wear.

In February 2025, a Russian Shahed kamikaze drone struck the NBK, causing severe structural damage. No radiation emission was recorded, but the functionality of the structure and the projected service life have undergone noticeable changes.

During the current mission, IAEA experts will check the level of safety, discuss with the management of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant the plans for the restoration of the structure and readiness for possible threats to nuclear safety.

This inspection demonstrates the growing international attention to the state of the Chernobyl zone after the aggression of the Russian Federation and the importance of stable control over its facilities.

According to the information of the International Atomic Energy Agency, all power units at the Khmelnytskyi, Rivne and South Ukrainian nuclear power plants of Ukraine have restored their full capacity.

Earlier, on November 20, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine reported about the forced reduction of the power of nuclear plants due to threats from Russian troops and the need to introduce preventive measures.

The IAEA mission, which arrived at the invitation of Ukraine, began operating at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
