The IAEA mission, which arrived at the invitation of Ukraine, began operating at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
The state enterprise “Chernobyl NPP” announced the start of the group’s work.
The main goal of the experts is to assess the level of security of the facility after the Russian drone strike that occurred in February this year.
In the months since the attack, the station’s specialists have been conducting emergency emergency measures to close the hole created by the impact in the arch of the so-called “New Secure Confinement”.
It is this building that covers the destroyed fourth power unit and the old sarcophagus. Although the main damage has been eliminated, the object needs a comprehensive inspection and assessment by international specialists.
During the night attack against February 14, the Russians launched 133 Shahed drones and simulated target drones over Ukraine. Ukrainian defenders shot down 73, the rest were lost from the radar. One of the drones with an explosive warhead hit the protective arch of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
This resulted in damage to the outer and inner shells, shutdown of ventilation systems and problems with power supply. A fire also broke out on the spot.
We will remind you that Ukrainian nuclear power plants reached almost maximum capacity.
The Ministry of Energy also explained why nuclear power plants reduce power after Russian attacks.
