The head of the IAEA, Raphael Grossi, said that the situation around the Kursk NPP remains serious, but his agency does not plan to host a permanent mission there. He expressed hope that there would be no need to return to the station.

This is reported by the Reuters agency.

“(The situation) is serious because there has been a military invasion, and this invasion has reached such a level that it is not very far from the nuclear power plant,” International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Grossi said.

Grossi visited the Kursk nuclear power plant last month and said the plant would be “extremely vulnerable” to an attack because it lacks a protective dome.

In comments to “RIA” made in New York before the debate at the UN General Assembly, Grossi expressed the hope that favorable circumstances will allow him not to visit the station again. “I hope there will be no need to return to the Kursk station, because it will mean that the situation has stabilized,” he said.

Grossi also noted that the IAEA has no plans to permanently station monitors at the plant, as it has done at four Ukrainian nuclear power plants, including the Zaporizhzhia plant, which was seized by Russian forces at the start of the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Grossi said the situation remains tense at the Zaporizhia NPP, where both sides regularly accuse each other of plans to attack the plant. “My experts continue to report military activity near the station,” he said.

We will remind:

The head of the IAEA, Raphael Grossi, said that there was a “danger of a nuclear incident” in the Kursk region, and the fighting near the Kursk nuclear power plant caused concern.
