“Hungary initiated a criminal case because of the death of Jozef Shebesten, the Transcarpathian Hungarian mobilized in Ukraine. This incident was the reason for mutual accusations between Kiev and Budapest”, – WRITE: www.radiosvoboda.org
The deputy spokeswoman of the Prosecutor General’s Office Catalin Serfozo stated that according to a statement filed by the police, unknown recruits in Ukraine attacked a man of Hungarian nationality, and later he died in unknown circumstances on July 6, 2025, probably as a result of bullying.
“Currently, this act is being suspected of a crime of unintentional murder,” said a representative of the Hungarian Prosecutor General’s Office.
Jozef Shebesthen died in the hospital of Beregov in Transcarpathia under the circumstances not yet clarified. His family claims that the man was forcibly drafted, taken to a military training and beaten there, which caused his death. The Ukrainian authorities denies it.
The case grew into a diplomatic scandal when Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Siyarto not only summoned the Ambassador of Ukraine Fyodor Shandor, but later accused the Ukrainian authorities of terminating the investigation of the tragedy.
According to the State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine, Siyarto has made a false statement, the investigation in Ukraine is on suspicion of abuse of power or official powers by a military official, and no evidence of violent death has been found.
In the Ukrainian information space, there are regular reports of scandals between the employees of the Tax Code and citizens on the streets of cities and villages. Negative mobilization information is rapidly spreading social networks. It has been repeatedly noted that this is the result of information and psychological operations of the Russian Federation.
Hungarian authorities have repeatedly demonstrated their favorable attitude to the Kremlin and criticized Ukraine. In March, the Hungarian EU Minister of EU Janos Boka suggested that Ukraine stop Ukraine and turn it into a buffer zone between Russia and the EU.
In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, such statements were rejected. The department emphasized that Ukraine’s security is a part of Europe’s security, and this should also be aware of the Hungarian side.
