Details: It argues that Washington should reconsider its attitude toward Russia, as it has done with China over the past few years, and allocate resources accordingly.

The priority direction of the report’s strategy is to ensure the victory of Ukraine in its defensive war against Russia, call for “massive” military and humanitarian aid to Kyiv, and give the Ukrainian armed forces the opportunity to strike deep into Russia with the help of weapons provided by the United States.

The report’s policy proposals go beyond the Biden administration’s commitments to Ukraine and run counter to the position of the former president, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, and his allies in Congress.

Trump has long argued that the US spends too much on European security. And he is campaigning for an agreement between Ukraine and Russia through direct negotiations with their leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.

However, the chairman of the Helsinki Committee, Republican Joe Wilson (South Carolina), dismissed the possibility that Trump would make a deal with Putin.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that Donald Trump will see through the insincerity of war criminal Putin,” Wilson told The Hill in a brief discussion about the report.

“Putin is not the kind of person with whom you can reach an agreement that would be substantial and lasting.”

The Hill reports that despite growing opposition within the Republican Party to providing military and economic support to Ukraine, foreign policy-focused Republican Party leaders are largely committed to supporting Ukraine, securing NATO commitments, and strengthening democracy in post-Soviet states. .

Prehistory:

  • On September 25, Putin announced that Russia would expand the conditions under which it is ready to use nuclear weapons.
  • In response, the EU said that Putin’s new threats to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear countries are another indication of his irresponsible behavior and will not change the EU’s position on continued support for Ukraine.
  • NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who is leaving this post at the end of September, was skeptical of Putin’s threats amid discussions about allowing Ukraine to launch long-range strikes against Russia.
  • On September 24, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that Ukraine has evidence of Russia’s intentions to strike three nuclear power plants on the eve of winter.
