As UNIAN correspondent reports, this opinion was expressed by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel at a briefing before the start of the EU Council meeting in Brussels.
“Guarantees are important. President Zelenskyi said that they should acquire membership next year. I’m sorry, I also told him several times: don’t give ultimatums. It’s not in your interests. The fact is that there are rules, the Copenhagen criteria, and we need to fulfill them,” Bettel emphasized.
According to him, it cannot be said that there are criteria for some countries, for example, for the countries of the Western Balkans, and these criteria do not apply to other countries.
He also notes that peace is an important fact for the accession process.
“As long as the Copenhagen criteria are not met, we cannot say: please, become part of the family, and we close our eyes, ears and mouth to everything. No, because we have rules and we have to follow them,” Bettel emphasized.
At the same time, he clarified, he does not want to disappoint Ukrainians, because Ukrainians are also fighting for Europeans. “We must provide them with guarantees, and we must not humiliate them,” the minister said.
About security guarantees He added that the peace agreement should contain security guarantees: “We cannot have a temporary ceasefire that will last three or four weeks. We need security guarantees, especially because the agenda of the negotiations is for the Ukrainians to give up some things,” Bettel said.
At the same time, according to his conviction, Ukraine would be lost without Europe and the USA.
