“Almost no other region of the EU will be so significantly affected by the hybrid actions organized by the Kremlin. There is no time for thinking – neither on the issue of protecting critical infrastructure, nor on the issue of imposing sanctions against the Russian shadow fleet. Germany stands firmly on the side of Latvia and the Baltic states,” he said.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany emphasized that the EU sanctions against the vessels of the “shadow fleet” of the Russian Federation and those behind them have already been introduced.
However, according to him, “much greater efficiency” and much more intense exchange between the Baltic Sea countries is needed.
In addition, he noted that it should be possible to take measures against vessels whose flag status is unclear, that is, when it is not clear in which country the tankers are registered.
“Now we must use all the possibilities provided by maritime law to stop such vessels,” he added.
Back in the fall, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that Russia is intensifying hybrid attacks against European states in order to test their resilience, in particular in Baltic Sea.
The day before, it was written that the border service of Finland, together with other Baltic Sea states and the European Commission, is creating a center maritime surveillance to protect critical underwater infrastructure in the Gulf of Finland.
