Fake news sites registered in Great Britain and similar to trusted British media allegedly spread disinformation about Western companies operating in Ukraine.

Details: According to the article, Russian propaganda is suspected. That is why there have been calls for parliamentarians to amend the law to force UK-registered news sites to disclose information about their owners, as is the case in the EU.

Although the sites – londoninsider.co.uk and talk-finance.co.uk – are English-language and registered in Great Britain, their materials were picked up and distributed in Ukraine, where British media have a reputation for reliability and credibility.

The Guardian writes that the use of these sites was noted by an American firm Sarnwhich works in Ukraine in the field of energy and military equipment. She said articles on the two sites falsely accused her of arms trafficking, court fraud and embezzlement.

The content on the sites appears to be generated by artificial intelligence, while analysis by a linguist hired by Sarn has shown that the original text was created by a Russian-speaking person.

The name of a real British journalist was under the articles, but he stated under oath that he knew nothing about the article for londoninsider.co.uk.

Direct speech one of the British Liberal Democrats, legislator Lord Wallace Saltersky: “It is extremely disturbing that London’s reputation as a media and financial center is being used by the Russian propaganda machine to harm Western companies operating in Ukraine.”

More details: Armen Agas, the deputy chairman of Sarn’s board, stated that the company categorically rejects “baseless and completely fake news”, which, according to him, “spreads” sites under the title: Weapons, money and Sarn: How the Czech-American group looted Ukraine.

“We believe we were targeted because of our economic development work in Ukraine during the conflict,” he added.

The incidents involving fake British news sites come amid an explosion of online disinformation campaigns by Russia before and after its invasion of Ukraine.

NewsGuard, an anti-disinformation company that studies and ranks news websites, found that false narratives about Ukraine and its allies were circulating online even before the February 2022 invasion.

The company said it debunked more than 250 false narratives related to the Russian-Ukrainian war and identified 627 sites that were spreading these myths. These false narratives ranged from propaganda claims that reports of mass killings by Russian forces in places like Bucha were “staged” to claims that Ukraine’s political elite was driven by Nazi ideology.
