The future Foreign Minister in the Merz government outlined his intentions about Ukraine/ photo ua.depositphotos.comThe future head of German Foreign Ministry in the government of Friedrich Merz Johann Vadeful noted that he would continue a policy aimed at supporting Ukraine. In an interview with DW, he promised that Berlin would try to bring it to the head of the Kremlin Vladimir Putin.
“I think everyone, especially Vladimir Putin, should be clear: we will stand on the side of Ukraine. We will support Ukraine and offer her the opportunity to be equal with Russia,” Vadeful said.
He also added that Germany intends to establish a dialogue with the Trump administration and convey its position to support Kiev in the war. According to Vadeful, Berlin wants to “make it clear to the Trump administration that in their interests have a very strong Ukraine in the European community.”
He stressed that his main task as the Foreign Minister will “make Europe stronger”, as well as establish “transatlantic relations with the United States, which now cause serious concern for all Europeans.”
He also confirmed Germany’s commitment to NATO principles, adding that European countries need to increase their defense budgets.
“Germany will take a leading position in this field. However, we also want to hear from Washington that they value our efforts and follow our common goals,” the politician added.

After the start of the war, Vadeful began to be severely criticized by Russia and support Ukraine, although he previously supported the construction of the Nord Stream – 2. In 2023, in an interview, he spoke for Berlin to allow Ukraine to strike German weapons in Russia.
