The first Sanctions Summit began in Kyiv on Thursday, November 27, with the participation of representatives of 21 states, including Ukraine, the United States, Great Britain, and EU member states.

As “Interfax-Ukraine” reported, the participants will discuss the impact and possibility of strengthening restrictions against the Russian Federation, as well as ways to reduce the loopholes for circumventing them.

Vladyslav Vlasyuk, authorized adviser to the President of Ukraine on sanctions policy, said that such key sectors as the shadow fleet, energy, and finance will be discussed during the two days of the summit.

The head of the government, Yulia Svyridenko, emphasized the need for sanctions against the Russian financial sphere.

“Now we are watching how Russia actively uses cryptocurrencies and other financial schemes. The flow of funds reaches billions of dollars every month, so we need to find a solution to stop it, and I think that should and can be part of today’s discussion,” she said.

David O’Sullivan, the special envoy for the implementation of EU sanctions, agreed with the need for such sanctions, especially in the field of cryptocurrencies.

Vlasyuk noted that the summit is being held at a good time, as the European Union is preparing the 20th sanctions package against Russia. EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Maternova emphasized that sanctions are “one of the strongest tools we have” because Moscow “does not understand diplomacy, only force.”

The summit program also includes a visit by its participants to the Kyiv Institute of Forensic Expertise, where they will get acquainted with the means of defeat in which the Russian Federation uses foreign components thanks to the circumvention of sanctions. In addition, on Friday, November 28, a number of Ukrainian public organizations and analytical centers will join the work at the event.
