His outspoken hostility to the European Union has strained the bloc, which has existed since World War II. Politico writes about it.

Trump’s attitude has also deepened divisions among European leaders and within the bloc, jeopardizing his ability to respond to the US president’s threats and taunts with the unity and strength he respects, the report points out.

The consequences of such a policy for Europe This leaves Ukraine’s fate in limbo ahead of 2026, not to mention existential questions about European security at a time when many fear that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s territorial ambitions will extend to Europe.

At the same time, as Politico points out, in many respects Europe has managed to hold on.

“Europeans cannot afford to cut ties and file for divorce because they are still too dependent, especially on security issues and the US military commitment to protect Europe,” explained Jana Puglirin, senior fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations.

However, she said, the leaders’ efforts to maintain strong ties with the US do not mean that the past year has not shown that long-term interests are no longer aligned.

“We have to be quite judicious. Previously, there was a clear common understanding of the old transatlantic relations, anchored by Western values, norms and principles, an international order based on rules. And now, in my opinion, we see the emergence of a competing project,” Puglirin stressed.

What does the Trump administration say?At the same time, the White House assures that, by encouraging Europe to spend more on its own defense, the United States is acting as a friend who seeks to restore order.

“President Trump has a great relationship with many European leaders, but he is never shy about telling the bitter truth. The devastating effects of uncontrolled migration and the inability of migrants to assimilate are a concern not only for President Trump, but also for Europeans themselves, who increasingly name immigration as one of the main problems. The policy of open borders has led to the spread of cases of violence, an increase in crime and other negative phenomena, which has a detrimental effect on the financial sustainability of social protection programs,” White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said.

In turn, in an interview with Politico earlier this month, Trump criticized European leaders as “weak,” saying they “don’t know what to do” on immigration. He also questioned whether European countries should continue to be allies, stressing that “it depends” on their policies and that he would not hesitate to interfere in European elections to support far-right parties.

“It coincided with the release of a new National Security Strategy that called for ‘building up resistance’ to European centrism, which is committing ‘civilizational suicide,’ and expressed disdain for the European Union, which the administration called ‘negative’ for US economic interests,” Politico added.

A threat to Europe from the USAAt the same time, Constance Stelzenmüller, a senior fellow at the Center for US-European Affairs at the Brookings Institution, called the European sections of the document a “watershed moment” for leaders on both sides of the Atlantic that “changed forever” the long-term strategy of the United States.

“It should not be underestimated what a shock it was for European leaders and the public to read the Europe section of the National Security Strategy and see on paper that this administration considers Europe, or European political centrists, unreliable allies and takes such a hostile position towards them. By 2026, we need to prepare and plan for the worst in every way. We have obvious vulnerabilities and they will be exploited,” she warned.

Trump also ends his year in office by reminding Europe of his desire to wrest control of Greenland from Denmark, a staunch NATO ally and whose per capita defense spending is among the highest of any member nation.

Politico recalled that on Saturday he appointed Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland. After that, he said that in this position he would focus on efforts aimed at “incorporating Greenland into the United States.”

“This is devastating for many countries that believed there was nothing more secure than their bilateral relationship with the United States,” Stelzenmueller noted.

USA and Europe – latest newsEarlier, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte explained why the US will not withdraw from NATO. According to him, there are three reasons for this in America.

“First: a safe Europe means a safe America. Second: the Arctic – seven coastal states, new sea lanes, China and Russia are active in this region. A safe Arctic is crucial for the security of the US mainland, and we can only achieve this together,” he emphasized.

The third reason Rutte called the importance of the security of the North Atlantic.

“In order to protect the USA, we have to ensure the security of the North Atlantic. This is also only possible together with NATO. Therefore, the USA has a direct interest in security to remain in NATO,” the NATO Secretary General said.
