In Ukraine, expositors from the time of fugitive president Viktor Yanukovych were sentenced in absentia. We are talking about a three-term People’s Deputy from the Party of Regions, the creator of the scandalous law on the “protection of the Russian language” Vadym Kolesnichenko, a former colonel of the Ukrainian militia, deputy commander of the special purpose regiment “Berkut”, known for his repeated participation in the management of illegal force actions of special forces Serhiy Kusyuk and the former head of the public militia of Security of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Ukraine in the city of Kyiv, Petro Fedchuk.
This is reported by the Prosecutor General’s Office.
“For maintaining a public accusation by the prosecutors of the Office of the Prosecutor General of the People’s Deputy of Ukraine of the VI convocation from the “Party of Regions” and the former chief of the public security police and the deputy commander of the Kyiv “Berkut” were sentenced to 5 years in prison. Ex-law enforcement officers were also deprived of the special rank of “police colonel”, – it is said in the message.
The law enforcement officers did not specify the names of those involved, but according to Ukrainian Pravda, they are a three-term People’s Deputy from the Party of Regions, creator of the scandalous law on the “protection of the Russian language”, Vadym Kolesnichenko, a former colonel of the Ukrainian militia, deputy commander of the special purpose regiment “Berkut”. The latter is known for his repeated participation in the management of illegal force actions by special forces Serhii Kusyuk and the former head of the public security police of the State Security Service of Ukraine in the city of Kyiv, Petro Fedchuk.
The court found the law enforcement officers guilty of exceeding power and official authority, which was accompanied by violence, inciting national enmity, hatred, and humiliating national honor and dignity.
In court, prosecutors were able to prove that in April 2010, Kolesnichenko organized and managed an exhibition of photos and documents entitled “Volyn Dissension – Polish and Jewish Victims of the OUN-UPA” at the Ukrainian House in Kyiv. His goal was to incite national enmity and hatred.
When the visitors of the exhibition tried to express their civil position regarding the course of these historical events, the ex-national deputy called on the law enforcement officers to use physical violence against them and insulted the feelings of citizens because of their ideological beliefs, the OGP emphasizes.
Following the calls of the people’s representative, the police officers exceeded the authority granted to them and used violence, causing physical injuries to some citizens.
In addition, they illegally detained 13 people, against whom protocols were drawn up for allegedly committing administrative offenses. Later, the court found all the detainees innocent.
In connection with the long-term hiding of the convicts from the investigative bodies and the court in the territory of the aggressor state and the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine, the court proceedings against them were carried out in absentia.
In addition, law enforcement officers are being prosecuted in another criminal proceeding – for committing a number of serious and especially serious crimes during mass protests in 2013-2014.
Currently, the trial is ongoing, and the pre-trial investigation was carried out by investigators of the State Bureau of Investigation.
Previously, the former Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Dmytro Tabachnyk and the ex-head of the State Registration Service Dmytro Vorona received sentences in absentia.
In addition, in Ukraine, according to the materials of the SBU and the SBU, they announced in absentia the suspicion of Serhii Ganzhi, a former high-ranking official of the SBU during the reign of Viktor Yanukovych. It was he who headed the “branch” of the FSB in occupied Melitopol and organized mass repressions against civilians in the temporarily occupied part of the Zaporizhia region.
