Turning on airplane mode: does the phone really charge faster / UNIAN collage, photo ua.depositphotos.comThe advice to turn on airplane mode while charging a smartphone has long been circulating on social networks. It is believed that this way the device will charge faster and more efficiently. SlashGear journalists decided to check whether this makes real sense – and the results turned out to be not so clear-cut.
Technically, airplane mode does help speed up charging a bit. After its activation, the phone disables mobile communication, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other wireless modules. In normal mode, they constantly work in the background and consume energy. When all this is turned off, the battery does not have to spend its charge in parallel, which means that it can accumulate a little faster.
To understand whether there is a real increase, journalists conducted a series of tests on the Samsung S24 Ultra. The phone was discharged several times to 0%, connected to a fast 65-watt charger via a wire, and the time it took for it to reach 100% was recorded. In all cases, the device was turned on when it reached 1% charge, and in some tests, airplane mode was activated immediately after that.
Do you need to turn on airplane mode while charging?
photo by SlashGearTests have shown that technically it really works – but the effect is very modest. In airplane mode, the smartphone was charged to 100% in 1 hour and 2 minutes, while with an active mobile Wi-Fi connection – in one hour and 9 minutes. Repeated measurements over several weeks confirmed a difference of 4–7 minutes.
SlashGear noted that an average gain of about five minutes can hardly be considered significant, especially given the fact that in airplane mode the user does not receive calls and messages, which makes this method useful only in those rare situations when you need to urgently get a charge in a short time, for example, before leaving the house.
Today, the charging speed largely depends on the power of the adapter, the quality of the cable and the support of fast charging technologies. If a weak power supply unit is used, turning on airplane mode will have almost no noticeable effect. With a more powerful charge, the difference can be noticeable, but still remains modest.
Thus, airplane mode can be considered rather a small bonus to charging, but by no means a universal solution. It does help the phone charge a bit faster, but modern chargers and proper battery usage still play a major role.
Previously, experts identified three common errors with USB‑C that impair charging speed. To get the maximum speed, it is important that all elements of the chain work correctly: the adapter, the cable and the device.
And if your device stopped charging normally, maybe the reason is a clogged charging port, which needs to be cleaned.
