The European Commission has warned the employees of the apparatus about the danger of espionage, which they may encounter during their work. The internal letter was quoted by Politico.

“Brussels is one of the largest centers of espionage in the world, where hundreds of employees of special services work, targeting our institution. Any person can become a target, regardless of what position he holds,” the warning reads.

It is noted that usually foreign intelligence officers work under the cover of diplomats, journalists, lobbyists, scientists or graduate students.

There are no specific sources of threat in the text. In 2019, the EU diplomatic service warned employees about the dangers of espionage by China and Russia.

Belgian intelligence agencies estimate that some embassies in Brussels may have 10 to 20 percent of diplomats as intelligence officers, Politico reported in 2020. European Union countries have repeatedly expelled employees of Russian diplomatic missions on suspicion of espionage.
