The European Commissioner for Trade Marosh Shefchovich stated on Friday that the EU seeks to conclude an agreement with the United States, but trade between countries should be based on “respect” and not “threats”.

“The EU is fully involved and seeks to conclude an agreement that will satisfy both parties. The European Commission remains ready to work in the spirit of goodwill. The trade between the EU and the US has no analogues and should be guided by mutual respect, not threats. We are ready to protect our interests, ”he wrote on the social network X after negotiations with his American colleagues.

Earlier today, US President Donald Trump reported that Washington could impose a 50 percent duty on all EU goods since June 1.

This statement sounded a few hours before the telephone negotiations of the European Commission on Marosh Shefchovich and US Trade Commission, Jameson Grair, and a few days after the EU, Washington’s proposals for mutual concessions in trade, says Politico.

On April 2, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of duties on goods from all over the world that will be imported to the United States. The basic customs rate on import of all foreign goods to the United States will be 10%. But for EU countries, it will be 20%. Since then, negotiations have begun.

On February 10, Donald Trump signed decrees on the introduction of 25 percent duties on the import of steel and aluminum since March 12.
