Details: The proposal of the executive body of the EU provides tariffs for the remaining 15% of agricultural imports from Russia in 2023, which have not yet been tariffs.
Following the proposal, “all agricultural imports from Russia will be subject to EU tariffs”, specified in the European Commission.
“The purpose of the proposal is to reduce imports on imports from Russia and Belarus. Such import, especially fertilizers, makes the EU vulnerable to potential compulsory actions by Russia and thus poses a risk to EU food security,” – explaining there.
Separately, the EU emphasizes that the proposed measures will not affect the transit of Russian agricultural products through the European Union to third countries.
The European Commission’s proposal must yet be considered and adopted by the European Parliament and the EU Council by a qualified majority.
Prehistory:
- Tariffs for the vast majority of agricultural products from Russia and Belarus, especially grain, have been operating in the European Union since July 2024.
- Ukraine, as well as Poland and the Baltic countries, has long been called for a complete ban on import of these goods.
