The European Commission initially foresees 1.9 billion euros in its budget for humanitarian aid for 2026, its press service reported on January 21.

Among other things, the budget includes 145 million for humanitarian aid to Ukraine “at a time when Russia’s invasion is in its fourth year.” Also, 8 million have been invested in humanitarian projects for Moldova.

According to the European Union’s executive body, 239 million people around the world are in need of aid, while major donors are cutting funding.

The European Commission also highlights:

  • 557 million euros for the West and Central Africa regions – it refers to the Sahel, the Lake Chad Basin, north-west Nigeria, the south of the continent, the Great Lakes region and the Greater Horn of Africa
  • 448 million for the Middle East – specifically the Gaza Strip, “following the fragile ceasefire agreed last year”, as well as Iraq, Yemen, Syria and Lebanon
  • 126 million for the humanitarian needs of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran
  • 95 million for Central and South America and the Caribbean, where “a complex humanitarian crisis due to armed conflict, widespread violence, political instability, acute inequality and environmental challenges” continues
  • 73 million to support Southeast Asia and the Pacific region, particularly the crisis in Myanmar and its impact on Bangladesh
  • 14.6 million for North Africa, a region that “remains vulnerable to complex political, economic and social challenges”

The European Commission adds that another €415 million remains in reserve for unexpected emergencies around the world and to support supply chains.

“EU humanitarian aid provides vital aid where it matters most: emergency food and housing, critical medical aid, protection of the most vulnerable population and support for children’s education in crisis zones,” the press service explains.

EU leaders on the night of December 19 approved the decision to grant Ukraine 90 billion euros for the next two years. It is a loan supported by the EU budget, and not a reparation loan, which has been actively discussed in recent weeks. This loan it is proposed to be divided into two parts: 30 billion – for budget support, 60 billion – for military.
