EU High Representative Josep Borrell, answering questions about possible changes in aid to Ukraine if Donald Trump becomes US president again, said that the European Union will continue to support Ukraine, regardless of the policy of the new United States administration.
This is reported by Ukrinform.
“I don’t know what the American administration will or will not do. For now, let me say that at this time the support from the European Union – military, civilian, economic, financial and humanitarian – is greater than [допомогу] from the USA. More than 100 billion euros is the bill we paid. Among this, 45 billion euros of military support. Of course, it is less than from the USA, but it is also a rather important number,” Borrell said.
The senior representative of the EU recalled that at the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, no one expected that Ukraine would be able to resist, since Russia was the fourth largest military spender in the world, and Ukraine was only 35th.
Trump promises to “withdraw the United States” from Russia’s war against Ukraine if he wins the election
“So the difference between the military capabilities of Russia and Ukraine was incredible. The fact that Ukraine resisted was a miracle of its time. At the beginning, do you remember what we offered to Ukraine? Helmets! Now we offer the F-16, and that makes a difference. One thing is obvious to me: as long as Ukraine resists, we must support it. Otherwise, we will make a historical mistake,” he emphasized.
US military aid to Ukraine — what is known
According to the calculations of the US State Department, since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, Washington has given Ukraine more than $55 billion in military aid.
On September 6, the US Department of Defense announced that a new $250 million military aid package for Ukraine covers air defense missiles, ammunition for rocket systems and artillery, armored vehicles and anti-tank weapons.
On September 11, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced a new support package for Ukraine, which includes funding to help the Ukrainian energy system and humanitarian aid, the total amount of which exceeds $700 million.
