The European Union is approaching the decision to include the Nord Stream-2 gas pipelines connecting Germany and Russia to a new proposal for sanctions against Moscow.

According to Bloomberg with reference to its sources, the European Commission will consult with member countries on the ban on gas pipelines passing along the Baltic Sea, and the decision will be approved in the light of recent events in the negotiations on the termination of the war in Ukraine.

It is important that the block plan has support for Germany. For German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, who stated in Rome last week, supporting the commission’s proposal to work on European measures against North Stream-2, the main hope is that sanctions can restrain the debate within the country about the revival of the pipeline, the interlocutors say.

The publication writes that sanctions would add weight to a clearer position of Europe, which does not want any significant return of Russian pipeline flows. The ban will also protect Berlin from any potential pressure on it by the US or Russia.

The rumors of the potential revival of the Pipeline project have intensified this year, when US President Donald Trump tried to become a mediator in peace and Ukraine.

After a full-scale invasion of Russia in Ukraine, Berlin suspended the certification of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, which has not yet started transporting Russian gas to Germany. Then, in September 2022, the explosions were destroyed by parts of the Nord Stream-1 and North Stream-2, resulting in the pipelines failed.

The European Commission will start consultations with Member States on the 18th Package of Sanctions this weekend. In order for the proposal to come into force, a unanimous support for 27 national governments of EU Member States is required.
