Details: High-ranking officials of the main department of the Federal Service of Execution of Sentences of Russia in the Rostov region, involved in the torture of prisoners, in particular Ukrainian prisoners of war, came under new sanctions of the European Union.

The new EU restrictions also apply to Russian judges involved in the persecution activist Alexey Horinov, who was sentenced to three years in prison for expressing his opinion about Russia’s war against Ukraine.
In addition, the Council of the European Union adopted a decision on sanctions against those involved in politically motivated persecution of journalists and activists associated with Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and his foundation.
The individuals included in the list are subject to an asset freeze, and EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing them with funds. Individuals are additionally subject to an entry ban, which makes it impossible for them to enter or transit through the territory of the EU.
In March 2024, the Council established a new system of restrictive measures against persons responsible for serious violations of human rights, repression of civil society and democratic opposition.
In May 2024 within the mentioned EU regime imposed sanctions on 28 peopleresponsible for serious violations of human rights, repression against the democratic opposition and activities that seriously undermine the rule of law in Russia.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of France Jean-Noel Barro said beforethat the EU expects to finalize the 20th package of sanctions against Russia by the end of 2025.
