The European Union on November 18 expanded sanctions against Iran over its support for Russia’s war against Ukraine, particularly against ships and ports used to transfer drones and missiles.

The 27-nation bloc agreed to ban any transactions with ports “used to transfer Iranian UAVs or missiles or related technology and components to Russia.” This was stated in a statement published during the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

“Today’s decision imposes a ban on the export, transfer, supply or sale from the EU to Iran of components used in the development and production of missiles and UAVs,” the statement also stated.

In addition, the Council of the EU adopted restrictive measures against one individual and four organizations due to Iran’s provision of missiles and drones in support of the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine. The sanctions concern Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) and its director, Mohammad Reza Hiabani, as well as three Russian shipping companies (MG Flot, VTS Broker and Arapax) whose vessels are involved in transporting Iranian-made weapons and ammunition through the Caspian Sea.

On September 13, 2024, the EU condemned the transfer of Iranian-made ballistic missiles to Russia, which is considered a direct threat to European security and a significant escalation of the war. The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said at the time that the EU would respond quickly and in coordination with international partners.
