The European Union believes that a difficult winter awaits Ukraine with its shelled energy system, but the situation will not be catastrophic.

About this in the interview “EuroPravdi” the EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Maternova said.

Maternova was asked about how difficult the winter is expected for Ukraine by European colleagues and what a pessimistic scenario might look like.

“Look, I certainly expect there to be some power outages. But from all the discussions we’ve had, all the scenarios we’ve been getting say it’s not going to be catastrophic. Yes, it will be difficult. Yes, this winter will not be pleasant,” Maternova answered.

According to her, the most vulnerable are Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odesa, as well as other cities with centralized heating.

She was asked about fears that the situation with electricity and heating will become so difficult that it will force millions of Ukrainians to go to Europe, and whether the EU is preparing for such a disaster scenario.

“I really hope we don’t have a catastrophic scenario, but there’s no doubt we’re going to have a tough winter. I will be here in Kyiv, so I will feel it personally. But the European Union has proven its ability to adapt. We have already shown that we are ready to support the millions of refugees who have crossed the border because of the war. For the first time in history, we used the Temporary Protection Directive to allow people to work and have a decent life while waiting for the opportunity to return to Ukraine. So yes, we are looking at different scenarios, and I think we will be ready,” Maternova said.

We will remind, according to the officials, the Kyiv region and the capital are almost 90% ready for the heating season, all works are taking place according to the schedule.

On September 6, Prime Minister Shmyhal said that Ukraine is already 80% ready for the heating season.

The Swedish government has approved the allocation of an additional 500 million Swedish kroner (almost 44 million euros) for heating and electricity supply in Ukraine.
