The decision on the construction of new nuclear generating capacities in Ukraine should be made exclusively by its government, the EU takes a neutral position on this issue, but will not give money for the project either.
The Ambassador of the European Union to Ukraine, Katarina Maternova, stated this in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.
“The EU has not expressed an official position neither for nor against the construction of new units of the Khmelnytsky NPP. I clearly said this in my interview with European Truth back in December. […] Decisions on the construction of new NPP units should be made by the Ukrainian authorities,” she said.
According to Maternova, there is no clear consensus among the EU member states regarding the development of new nuclear generating capacities.
“Currently, the EU does not finance the construction of nuclear power plants. This also applies to nuclear power plants in Ukraine. And this also applies to financing by European financial institutions,” the ambassador said.
The discussion of the project to complete the third and fourth power units of the Khmelnytsky NPP on January 10 caused a conflict in the Verkhovna Rada between Energy Minister German Galushchenko and People’s Deputy Inna Sovsun.
The deputy stressed that public statements about the comprehensive support of this project by Western partners are not true. The minister criticized Sovsun, accusing her of creating a negative impression of Ukraine’s energy policy abroad.
This conflict became the reason for launching the procedure for Galushchenko’s resignation from the position of Minister of Energy.
