The European Union allocated 160 million euros to Ukraine to support Ukraine’s energy security on the eve of winter, of which 100 million euros from Russian assets will be directed to repair works and renewable energy sources.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, reported this, Interfax-Ukraine writes.
“Today we will make available 160 million euros, of which 60 million euros of humanitarian aid will be allocated for shelters and heaters and 100 million euros of frozen Russian assets will be directed to repair work and renewable energy sources,” she said.
The president of the European Commission stated that half of the entire energy infrastructure of Ukraine was destroyed by Russia, which is equivalent to the power of the three Baltic states combined.
“In general, Ukraine needs 17 gigawatts of power for this winter. Today I want to propose actions in three areas. This is repair, this is connection and this is stabilization,” explained the President of the European Commission.
Speaking about repairs, the President of the European Commission noted that 80 percent of Ukraine’s thermal power plants and a third of hydropower capacities were destroyed.
The other 60 million euros will go to humanitarian projects.
