“The map shows the trajectory of the flight of three Russian Mig -31, which on September 19 violated the air space of Estonia near the Island of Weinloo,” – said in the department.

They specified that the aircraft remained in the air space of Estonia for almost 12 minutes with transponders switched off, without radio communications, and that F-35 fighter jets for the patrol of the Baltic airspace had to respond to this incident.

The Estonia Ministry of Defense added that it was already the fourth violation of aircraft this year.

Russian Mig-31 first flew in the direction of the capital Tallinn, and then circled for about 12 minutes until the Italian F-35, stationed in the region, were not raised into the air for intercepting. The chairman of European diplomacy Kai Callas, who until July last year headed the Estonia Government, called this event “extremely dangerous provocation”.

In terms of this incident, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation cynically denied the breach of borders by aircraft. They stated that the fighters were allegedly planned from the Karelia to the airfield to the Kaliningrad region and that “the flight was strictly in accordance with international rules for the use of airspace, without violating the borders of other countries, which was confirmed by means of objective control.”

Following the violation of the airspace, Estonia summoned the Russian diplomat and officially began consultations with allies under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsakhkna called the invasion of Russian aircraft “unprecedentedly bold.”
