The Estonia Government has approved the expansion of sanctions against Russian liquefied natural gas at the initiative of the Foreign Minister of Margus Tsakhni – the Foreign Ministry reported on September 18.

The day before, Tsakhku made a proposal to the government of the country to expand existing sanctions that prohibit the import and purchase of natural gas from Russia. He called the purpose of introducing a full ban on import of liquefied natural gas.

The minister pointed out that Estonia is currently allowing the purchase and import of LNG from Russia if it is not used in the distribution network.

“Just (proposed – ed.) The amendment will come into force, the import on import will also extend to liquefied natural gas outside the distribution network, ”he said.

Tsakhna stressed that Russia has not changed its ambitions and instead continues the war against Ukraine and to overcome global security. He expressed the intention of Tallinn to raise the price of aggression for Russia and look for ways to reduce the revenues of her military budget.

Similar measures, according to the minister, will also be applied to Belarus.

“The government approved the continuation of sanctions. The ban will come into force on January 1, 2026, which will give market participants enough time to get acquainted with changes and to reorganize their activities accordingly, ”the Foreign Ministry added.

According to the government, since import volumes are small, restrictions will not have a significant impact on the economy or business environment of Estonia.

In September 2022, the Estonian government banned the import and purchase of liquefied natural gas from Russia. The ban was extended to the provision of related gas transmission services and its use in the country’s distribution systems.
