The creators of “Arkain” are allergic to AC/DC: the composer explained why there were no licensed songs in the series

The composer “Arkain” said that all the songs were written specifically for the series / Photo – NetflixThe soundtrack of “Arcane” is distinguished by world-class stars, Sting, Twenty One Pilots, Imagine Dragons, Stray Kids and many others worked on the music for the series. But the main feature turned out to be that all these musicians wrote songs specifically for the series, and did not simply sell licenses for already existing tracks.

Arcane composer Alex Seaver told what this decision was connected with. According to the musician, the showrunner of the series, Christopher Linke, can’t stand AC/DC’s well-worn songs in the Marvel movies. At such moments, he does not understand why talented composers are not asked to write something new especially for the cinema.

When Link finally had the opportunity to choose what music would be played in his series, he decided to gather musicians and have them write new music, and leave the lyrics to himself and Seaver, so that the lyrics of the tracks fit with the events of the series. Alex notes that the performers themselves like this approach:

“All credit to Christian and Fortiche. Almost every episode they set aside one or two scenes for a few minutes specifically for a song. They don’t know what it’s going to be yet, but they trust the musicians and they believe they can do it.”

The only exception to the rule was the song “Heavy is the Crown” by Linkin Park, who recently returned. Band leader Mike Shinoda himself invited Linke and Seaver to his place and showed them the band’s first two new songs, one of which was “Heavy is the Crown”. The creators of “Arkain” changed the tempo and mood of the song, so now we have two completely different sounding tracks with the same lyrics.

It is worth noting that Shinoda himself is a long-time fan of League of Legends and, in particular, Arcane. Even when only the first season of the screen adaptation was making waves around the world, he already wanted to work with Linke and Fortiche.

This unique approach to the soundtrack has obviously paid off: the composition Ma Meilleure Ennemie by French rappers Pomme and Stromae, the author of the songs Alors On Danse and Formidable, is currently ranked 3rd in the world and 5th in Ukraine in terms of popularity on Spotify. In total, the song was listened to 35 million times in a week.
