At the same time, the former minister warned the Trump administration against hoping to “quickly settle” the war, or “to settle it on terms favorable to Russia.”
This opinion was expressed by the former foreign minister of Great Britain, William Hague, in a podcast of the British newspaper The Telegraph. He emphasized that if the future administration of President Trump allows the “collapse of Ukraine”, it will affect the authority of the United States.
Hague said that Trump criticizes Biden for his decisions on Afghanistan, “but if he leads to the collapse of Ukraine, it will be a much greater humiliation for the United States.”
“It is in Trump’s own interest to support the power of the West in the world,” Haig is convinced.
At the same time, the former minister warned the Trump administration against hoping to “quickly settle” the war, or “to settle it on terms favorable to Russia.” He noted that freezing the war on the contact line would mean laying the groundwork for a new war.
“This would lead to another, third war, because Putin will come again for what is left,” Haig expressed his conviction.
“It is very clear, he wants all of Ukraine. At least, he wants so much that what remains cannot function as a sovereign state, that it cannot become a member of the EU, NATO, cannot make loans, receive money for the reconstruction of cities. That is, so that it is not a functional state,” the diplomat explained the plans of the ruler of the Kremlin.
According to him, without security guarantees from the USA and NATO, Ukraine will not be able to exist as a state, will not be able to “stop Putin in two years, after he rebuilds his armed forces and returns for the rest.”
“You can naively say that we will establish peace in 24 hours, but it will not help if you are building a new war,” Haig emphasized.
According to Hague, if Trump stops aid to Ukraine, the European Union and Great Britain will have to strengthen theirs. But, as the diplomat noted, this aid cannot replace American aid and is only temporary. But, as the former minister noted, it is not only about money, but also about technology. “Without American satellites and software from American companies, Ukraine would not have survived until the present moment. European countries do not have the arsenal of weapons to support Ukraine in a full-scale modern war,” the British diplomat stated.
At the same time, he added that this applies not only to Ukraine – no country would be able to defend itself without the help of the United States.
“For any democracy, if a country were to suffer a prolonged attack, it would be very difficult to survive without the goodwill and generosity of the United States,” Hague said.
Haig is the British Foreign MinisterHaig headed the Foreign Ministry of Great Britain during the annexation of Crimea. He admitted that the West made a mistake when it did not respond more decisively to the actions of the Russian Federation in 2014. He noted that at that time his country was a member of the EU and proposed tough sanctions against the Russian Federation, while Berlin and Rome “hoped to somehow agree on a long-term peace with Putin, and it was difficult to dissuade them from such a position.”
