The Chernobyl NPP was restored by the United Energy System of Ukraine / photo REUTERSOn the night of January 20, Russia attacked the nodes of the energy infrastructure that provide power to the facilities of the Chernobyl exclusion zone. Currently, the Chornobyl NPP is powered by the United Energy System of Ukraine, according to the statement of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.
“Thanks to the coordinated work of energy workers, all facilities of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, in particular the New Safe Confinement and spent nuclear fuel storage facilities, are powered by the United Energy System of Ukraine in regular mode,” the message reads.
It is noted that the radiation background at the industrial site and in the exclusion zone does not exceed control levels. The station is provided with the necessary supply of fuel and serviceable backup power sources in case of repeated attacks.
“There is currently no direct threat to the population and the environment. Power engineers and station staff continue to monitor the situation in an intensified mode,” added the Ministry of Energy.
The department emphasized that such actions of the aggressor are absolutely unacceptable and are a gross and cynical violation of all fundamental principles of nuclear and radiation safety.
The situation at the Chornobyl NPPOn January 20, as a result of a Russian attack, critical substations that ensure the operation of Ukrainian nuclear power plants were damaged, and the Chornobyl nuclear power plant lost external power. Ukraine urged the IAEA to urgently convene a meeting of the Governing Council and resolve the issue of Russia’s presence in the Council.
The functionality of the New Safe Confinement is completely lost, but there are currently no prerequisites for the spread of contamination from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) outside the Exclusion Zone, said Greenpeace Ukraine radiation safety and nuclear energy expert Jan Vande Putte.
