According to The Times, in a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, Starmer agreed “with the importance of clarifying” the proposal for training Ukrainian soldiers to further strengthen Ukraine’s capabilities on the battlefield.
About 51,000 Ukrainian soldiers have already been trained in Great Britain as part of the “Interflex” operation. However, as The Times writes, sending troops to Britain involves a “multi-stage journey.”
“There are fears that Ukrainians do not want to join the army due to fears that they will not receive proper training or equipment before being sent to the front. Moving the training to the west of Ukraine could appease those who want to avoid the draft and increase the number Ukrainians who are taking the basic course,” the article says.
Before the war, British forces trained Ukrainian soldiers in western Ukraine, and a small number of British military medics still train in Ukraine.
Britain can train the Ukrainian military in UkraineBritish Defense Minister John Healy said earlier that British troops could go to Ukraine to train soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He became the first representative of the government to publicly support this move.
The training bases in western Ukraine are hundreds of miles from the front line, but have come under Russian strikes in the past, and Western officials have previously expressed fears that any British troops in Ukraine would become “targets” for Russian missiles.
